Definitions

Definitions (shortened to "defs") are a way to define short lines of information that describe a particular object, person or activity. These definitions are listed on the web site, but are also available while playing on a game server.

History

Back in 2005, a member of the FBG development team used to run a Counter-Strike: Source server called Sky Blue Gaming. As the server was incredibly popular due to its size and vibrant community - and as lots of new players were coming to Counter-Strike at the time - it became apparent that lots of people were asking the same questions. Being a server admin can be difficult most of the time, but add in the factor of people asking you over and over how to enable the in-game console, it became very tedious.

Therefore, we developed a simple question and answer system to server this purpose... and before long, it became so popular that regular players wanted their own glory by having their own definition.

The definitions we use on the Final Battleground expands this system so individual servers have their own collection of definitions, and which server administrators have full control over.

Edit

Global and Local

There are two types of definition - global and local. The global definitions are ones that are available - as the name implies - on each Final Battleground game server. Local definitions are created on a specific server and are only available there.

The main purpose of a global definition is to provide generic information, to which can help players about the Final Battleground, Counter-Strike, or any other global subject. Local definitions are fully controlled by the server administrators and are left up to them to decide how they want to use the resource.

However, it is possible for non-FBG admins (i.e. normal players) to create global definitions as well - see below.

Edit

Using Definitions

In order to use a definition on the server, you must use the lookup command with FBG enabled on your server. It is identified with a simple question mark (?) immediately followed by the term you wish to look up. Do not insert a space between the question mark and the term.

Player: ?defs
*** defs: Definitions are cool!

Because it is possible for a global definition to override a local definition (by using the same term), you can still access the local definition by using the local lookup command - an asterisk (*).

Player: ?defs
*** defs: This is a global definition!
Player: *defs
*** defs: This is a local definition!

Edit

Creating A Local Definition

To create a local definition, the server must first have definitions turned on (defaults to on, changeable by a server admin). Then, while connected to the server in game, type the following into the in-game chat:

!defset <term> <answer>

For example, to tell players about how great the AK47 is, use the following:

!defset ak47 I think the AK47 is totally awesome

NOTE: It is possible to create local definitions using the same term as a global definition. If this is the case, the local definition on the server will be looked up first, unless using the asterisk.

WARNING: If a term already exists, it will be overwritten.

If you are not a server admin, to create or change a local definition will cost you an amount of Plinks defined by the server admin. This will range between 1 PL and 1000 PL. If you do not have enough Plinks, you will be told and the definition will not be entered into the database.

Edit

Creating A Global Definition

Creating a global definition is much the same as a local definition, instead use the command !defgset:

!defgset <term> <answer>

However, the critical difference between a global definition and local definitions is the amount of Plinks you are charged. All players (including server admins) are applicable for this charge. To create a global definition will cost 1000 PL, subsequent changes will cause the cost to multiply by two (2000 PL for the next change, 4000 PL for the next, and so on).

NOTE: You cannot change a global definition that was created by an FBG admin.

Edit

Local Definition Administration

To delete definitions or find out more information about who created a definition, you must be a server admin as it requires access to the !fadmin command. Please see the !fadmin command for more details.
